Defeat the Anti-Transgender Bill

That anti transgender feeling that I felt deep within my soul the morning after the 2017 presidential election, just got real. On Wednesday January 4, 2017, an anti-transgender bill was introduced in the Minnesota House. The bills authors are Republicans Duane Quam and Steve Drazkowski. It’s called HF0041. Watch out!

Andy Birkey of The Column wrote:
HF0041 would bar schools from allowing transgender and gender nonconforming students from using the facilities of their gender.

The bill states in part: The purpose of this section is to protect and provide for the privacy and safety of all students enrolled in public schools and to maintain order and dignity in restrooms, locker rooms, changing rooms, showers, and other facilities where students may be in various states of undress in the presence of other students.

I thought this bill was already defeated and put to rest. It surely does not look like that is the case anymore. I’m really angry that the “safety” concern is being brought up again as a need for a bill. How many times does the same data showing that there has NEVER been any act of violence in a bathroom or locker room by a transgender person need to be rehashed. Unfortunately, scare tactics that label transgender women as “men in dresses” who lurk in women’s bathrooms seem to be a common theme. Even more unfortunate is that these scare tactics seem to work as a way to win the minds and hearts of the uninformed. We must stop this.

Discrimination is not the answer now, it never has been the answer. I believe education and understanding what it means to be transgender has to be at the forefront of this fight. Let’s start by understanding the being transgender is not a choice.”
