Creekside Commons: Our Neighbors Next Door

Creekside Commons: A Dream Come True
On a beautiful September day in 2010, the Mayflower congregation celebrated the completion of Creekside Commons, welcoming many new neighbors into this beautiful new affordable housing facility adjacent to the church. The project, completed with Plymouth Church Neighborhood Foundation, has drawn widespread praise for its attractive design and for addressing our city’s needs for housing choice and transit accessibility. If you have questions, comments or concerns about the project, please contact Jim McConkey or Bob Pomroy through the Church Office..

Additional Volunteers Needed for Homework Helpers
Additional volunteers are still needed to act as homework helpers for children, youth and adults at Creekside Commons, Monday-Thursday, from 6–8 p.m. You can volunteer once a week or once a month. And if you have children over 12, you can volunteer together. Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Other Needs
Mayflower members provide opportunities for Creekside residents -- both adults and children -- to practice their English skills while learning about the world around them. The Creekside residents are always eager for more opportunities to learn English if there are other Mayflower members who would like to start a class. We are still collecting bicycles of all sizes, especially women’s bikes. We are in the process of developing a loan program for Creekside residents to borrow bikes. We also want to supply a bike helmet to each person who will be riding a bike and we are looking for help to locate a source for free or low-cost helmets. The Programming Committee adopted the following goal statement: Through the contribution of its congregants' time, talent and resources, Mayflower UCC desires to create, execute, and support projects and on-going programs at Creekside Commons with the intention of forwarding the following objectives:

• Creating a secure and stable home environment within which Creekside Commons residents can continue to build and strengthen a workable foundation for their lives.

• Building connectedness between Creekside Commons residents and their surrounding communities, such that they create a strong sense of belonging and desire to integrate into their new residence and neighborhood.

• Empowering residents to seek, locate, and leverage the resources available to support them in living a full and joyful life.

Imagine What’s Possible: Creekside Commons
In 2011, the planning team for the next UCC General Synod invited congregations to submit their stories of how they have imagined and given birth to a congregational dream. More than 150 congregations entered the friendly competition. Mayflower submitted its Creekside Commons project, and while it was not one of the selected winners, the contest showed us that the United Church of Christ is a vibrant and passionate denomination of which we are proud to be a part.
