Advent Candle Ritual at Home

Each Sunday starting on November 28, use the liturgy to hold an Advent candle lighting with your family. The liturgy and music for the song is available here.

Centering Prayer

Mondays, 6:30–7 pm, Zoom
We welcome you to take up this practice this advent season. Come and join us in Centering Prayer at Mayflower. RSVP to Cate Calkins (cate2004@me.com) to receive the Zoom invite.

Holden Village Evening Prayer with Marty Haugen

Wednesdays, Dec 8 and 15, 5:45 pm, live in the Sanctuary (not livestreamed)
This evening prayer service was written at the Holden Village Retreat Center during the winter of 1985-86. The small winter community there (who collaborated with Marty Haugen in creating the service) had asked for a vespers (evening) service that would incorporate more inclusive and prophetic language. Over the past 30 years, the Holden Evening Prayer has been translated into numerous languages and prayed in a number of different Christian denominations. So, come! And join us for a mid-week time of music and prayer. A gentle reminder: you will need to show proof of vaccination and wear a mask.

Acoustic Christmas in the Courtyard

Sun, Dec 12, 4:30 pm
Christmas carol singing around the fire with Marty Haugen. Dress warmly and have money handy for warm treats provided by the Youth Group. Masks required.

Sunday Advent Worship

8:30 and 11:00 (livestreamed) [picture here]

Each Sunday in Advent, we will be adding to our nativity scene during the Time with Children. Join us on our Advent journey as we build the scene, and with it, our anticipation of good things to come. Click here to see “The Manger,” a film by David Carey about the making of Mayflower’s manger scene by artist Sandy Spieler, of Heart of the Beast Puppet Theatre.

  • Nov 28: First Sunday in Advent – Lighting the Hope candle…
  • Dec 5: Second Sunday in Advent – Lighting the Peace candle…
  • Dec 12: Third Sunday in Advent – Lighting the Joy candle…
  • Dec 12: At 11 am the youth will sing and the bells chime
  • Dec. 19: Fourth Sunday in Advent – Lighting the Love candle…

We will welcome many children back into the Sanctuary after their vaccinations. (Just the beginning; the welcome will continue in the weeks ahead as more and more children are fully vaccinated.) Music Sunday with Copper Street Brass and Mayflower Choirs, including the Children’s Choir.

Next year we fully expect to do our full market in the dining room with coffee, treats and conversation!

La Creche
Now Until Sunday, December 19
We have had a relationship with the La Creche Early Childhood Center for more than 20 years. Unfortunately, it is still not practical to do our traditional giving tree format. Like last year, we will be collecting monetary donations to help families purchase gifts for their children and afford some of their other needs that may otherwise be out of reach during this trying time.

If you would like to make this gift, please mail checks to Mayflower with La Creche in the memo. If you would prefer making an online contribution in Realm, log in to Realm, select “Giving” in the left column, select the “+ Give” box, and then select “La Creche” from the dropdown arrow of selected funds! Questions? Contact Bree McKee-Miller.

Christmas Fund
Each year, Mayflower participates in all five of the special offerings of the United Church of Christ. The Christmas Fund supports retired clergy in need and those who need special support due to illness or disability. It is one way of offering care to those who have served the church for many years, often on small salaries and pensions. Donate directly to the Christmas Fund.

Poinsettias
The poinsettias decorating the Sanctuary starting December 12 have been donated by church members, many in honor of or memory of loved ones. Proceeds from their sales are going towards the 2022 Youth Trip. If you purchased a poinsettia, you may take it home after worship on Christmas Eve. Plants that are not picked up will be delivered by Sarah or Howard to our home-bound members of our congregation.
